Heated bathroom floors offer a luxurious and comfortable experience, transforming your chilly bathroom into a cozy oasis. Understand how these floors work and learn how radiant heating systems can elevate your bathroom renovation project.

Flooring options for heated bathroom floors

When it comes to heated bathroom floors, choosing the right flooring material is crucial. Not only do you want something that can handle the heat, but it should also be durable, resistant to moisture, and aesthetically pleasing. Here are some popular flooring options for heated bathroom floors:

  • Ceramic Tiles: Ceramic tiles are a popular choice for heated bathroom floors due to their durability and heat-conducting properties. They are available in various colors, patterns, and designs, allowing you to create a unique look for your bathroom.

  • Stone: Natural stone, such as marble or granite, is another excellent option for heated bathroom floors. Not only do they provide a luxurious and timeless appeal, but they also retain heat well.

  • Resilient Materials: Vinyl and linoleum are resilient flooring options that work well with heated bathroom floors. They are available in a wide range of styles and colors, and they are comfortable underfoot.

Installation and maintenance of bathroom floor heating

Installing a heated bathroom floor may seem like a daunting task, but with the right information and guidance, it can be a straightforward process.

Step 1: Preparing the subfloor

Remove any existing flooring, ensuring that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Repair any cracks or uneven areas to create a smooth surface for installation.

Step 2: Installing the heating system

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to lay out and secure the underfloor heating mats or cables on top of the subfloor. Make sure to keep an even spacing between the heating elements to provide uniform heat distribution.

Step 3: Connecting the heating system

Connect it to the electrical supply according to the manufacturer's guidelines. It's crucial to follow safety protocols and regulations during this process to ensure a safe and efficient heating system.

Step 4: Installing the flooring

Ensure that the flooring material is compatible with heated systems and follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Take extra care not to damage the heating elements during the flooring installation process.

Advantages of heating bathroom floors

  • Comfort: Heated floors provide consistent warmth, making your bathroom more comfortable, especially during colder seasons. Stepping onto a warm floor after a shower or bath can be a luxurious and soothing experience.

  • Even heating: Heated floors distribute heat evenly across the room, eliminating cold spots. This uniform heating can lead to a more pleasant and consistent bathroom environment.

  • Space saving: Unlike radiators or baseboard heaters, heated floors don’t take up wall space. This can be particularly valuable in bathrooms where space is often limited.

  • Quiet operation: Radiant floor heating operates silently, without the noise associated with forced-air systems or other types of heaters.

  • No maintenance: Once installed, radiant floor heating systems typically require no maintenance, providing long-term convenience.

Is it safe to install electric radiant floor heat in the shower?

Yes, both SunTouch and Nuheat products have been thoroughly tested and are UL listed for use in shower floors and seats. However, radiant floor heating is not approved to be installed in the walls of a shower. Installing radiant floor heat in any wall is a violation of housing and electric code.

Just keep in mind that mats and cables being installed in a shower cannot be repaired if they are cut during installation. Once the outer coasting of a wire has been cut, it is no longer waterproof. Even repair kits made by the manufacturers cannot restore the waterproofing.

Also, it is recommended that separate mats or cables be used to heat the shower floor and the bathroom floor. This is so the in floor heat in the bathroom floor will not need to be replaced if the shower is remodeled or repaired in the future.
