What is the Cost of Installing a Radiant Heated Floor?

Share this Article:

Radiant floor heating adds a touch of luxury and cozy comfort to any room and it’s one of the top choices in home remodeling today. It can be used as the main source of heating throughout your entire home or as a luxury add-on in rooms like bathrooms or kitchens.

There are two primary technologies that are used in floor heating today – hydronic and electric.  In recent years, electric radiant floor heating has gained considerable popularity, especially with projects where floor heating is used as a supplemental heat source (bathroom, kitchen and basement upgrades).

Generally, electric systems are preferred to hydronic options due to significantly lower installation costs, zero maintenance requirements, design considerations (no need to raise the floor), higher efficiency and more even heat distribution. In this article we will provide a breakdown of costs for typical projects utilizing the top 5 electric floor heating systems that are most frequently installed in US and Canadian homes.

#1: SunTouch Floor Heating Mats (aka HeatWeave)

Made in USA by Watts Radiant, it is the most popular electric floor heating system in the US. Installation: mats are rolled out on subfloor to cover the area that needs to be heated, , embedded in mortar, connected to electric supply line and after it cures they are ready for any floor covering.

Recommended for: tile, stone, hardwood, laminate, carpet, bathroom, kitchen, mudroom, basement

For standard projects (single bathroom, kitchen, basement) you can get a kit containing all you need to install the system, including a floor heating mat (or two mats depending on the floor area you need to heat), programmable thermostat, installation accessories and detailed printed installation manual. The system comes with a 25-year manufacturer warranty. You can also buy all the above parts of the system separately for any custom configuration you may need.

System with Programmable Thermostat $380 $436 $474 $547 $657 $768
System with Touch-Screen Programmable Thermostat $420 $476 $409 $587 $697 $808

#2: Nuheat Floor Heating Mats

Canadian-based Nuheat is another popular brand for electric floor heating with more than 60 standard mat sizes to fit almost any room configuration or shape. You can also order a custom size and shape mat that will fit your room like a glove (ideal for odd-shaped rooms with rounded corners and walls).

Installation: Lay mats on subfloor, connect to power line (120V or 220V), embed in thinset mortar or self-leveling compound, lay any floor covering over it after the mortar cures.

Recommended for: Tile, stone, hardwood, laminate, carpet, bathroom, kitchen, mudroom, basement.

#3: Warmwire Floor Heating Cables

WarmWire is a floor heating system that uses heating cables instead of mats. It costs less as it’s takes a bit longer to install than Nuheat or SunTouch mat systems but it is equally effective and can be used for the same applications as the above two. Installation: Lay out WarmWire cables on the subfloor using  cable straps, do all proper wiring for the sensor and thermostat, encapsulate in thinset mortar or self-leveler and lay your floor covering of choice once the mortar has cured. Recommended for: Tile, stone, hardwood, laminate, carpet, bathroom, kitchen, mudroom, basement.

#4: Nuheat Floor Heating Cables

Another floor heating system from Nuheat that uses cables instead of mats, this can be used for custom layouts in odd-shaped rooms and spaces where mats would be hard to use. Works well as a complete floor heating system or in addition to the mat system.

Installation: Lay cables on the subfloor using special guides and when all necessary electrical wiring is in place, cover the system with thinset mortar or self-leveling compound. After the mortar has cured, the floor is ready for tile or any other floor covering.

Recommended for: Tile, stone, hardwood, laminate, carpet, bathroom, kitchen, mudroom, basement.

#5: SunTouch Underfloor Retro-Fit Floor Heating Mats

This system is designed for adding radiant heat to an existing floor without removing the floor covering (if there’s access to the floor from underneath, such as a crawlspace, basement or first floor).

Installation: Staple the mats to the beams in the joist bays beneath the existing floor, install fiberglass insulation below the mats.

Recommended for: stone, tile, laminate.
